Thank you for choosing to make your event carbon neutral. Events often come with a big carbon footprint and exhibitors, performers, speakers and delegates are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of the events they attend. We help clients in the Middle-East to make their events Carbon Neutral, Calculate their Carbon Emissions for an Event. We specialize in Middle-East Emissions operating in UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, Fujairah), Oman (Muscat), Qatar (Doha), Saudi Arabia & Bahrain.

Why run a carbon neutral event?

An unintended consequence of events is the amount of carbon emissions they can release into the atmosphere. Right now, there is a great opportunity for brands and companies to capture the imagination of an increasingly environmentally aware public by setting out a strong stance on their event emissions. At an event, the main sources of carbon include:
• Participant travel
• Hospitality
• Catering
• Powering the event space

Emissions like these add up quickly, and even modestly sized international events can have a footprint equal to thousands of car journeys.

Addressing these emissions is not about playing a blame game. It is about leading by example. The event organiser who stands up, takes accountability for this contribution to climate change, and pledges to do something about it can engage attendees and inspire a real shift in attitudes.

What does it mean to become carbon neutral?

You should be rigorous in claiming and publicising an event as carbon neutral. The term should only be used in accordance with the guidance in this toolkit, which is based on our Target Neutral Carbon Neutral Protocol. If you are only reducing emissions and offsetting part of your event, you should not publicise your event as carbon neutral. Instead, you should use the phrase “carbon offset travel”, “carbon offset catering”, and so forth.

Our guidance and toolkit is designed for use with small, medium events, Very large & international events. We use an internationally recognised carbon neutral standard such as British Standard PAS2060

We are committed to supporting your event’s carbon neutral claim. We do this by providing our footprint calculator, this guidance document, an offsetting service, and any marketing/ communication material necessary to help you make a public statement.

Carbon Footprinting of Events

The term carbon footprint has become hugely popular in discussions around the environmental impact of human activity. Carbon emissions have been identified as a human-generated cause of changes in global climate. A key issue is how to measure carbon emissions.

Here then it is necessary to understand the difference between:

Direct emissions: these will overwhelmingly relate to those emissions released as a result of fossil fuel burned as a result of the event (i.e. before, during or after the event itself). For example, fuel burned in venue development, by organisers during the event (e.g. vehicle fleet) and critically by spectators travelling to and from and during the event.

Indirect emissions: these relate to those that do not occur as a result of the immediate burning of fossil fuels, but which still are directly caused by event activity. For example, turning on flood lights for a rugby match places demands on the electricity grid, which is in part maintained by burning fossil fuels. Other indirect emissions would include those required to produce the goods and services that are consumed during or because of an event (including electricity at hotels, and energy used in processing food and drink consumed at an event, producing event merchandise etc).

1. Recycle equipment, materials, and resources wherever you can
2. Find sustainable ways to save on waste – materials, food, etc. – during your event
3. Whenever possible, book accommodation close to or at your venue
4. Save on paper and make your event invitations, brochures, leaflets digital
5. Optimize energy consumption, or opt for clean, renewable energy sources to power your event
6. Encourage your attendees through incentives to choose environmentally friendly transport methods to your venue
7. Plan your event with eco-friendly logistics solutions in mind, such as reduced freight times, etc.
8. Source your equipment locally to cut back on your event’s carbon footprint
9. Work with “smart venues” that are committed to sustainable practices
10. Collaborate with trusted event suppliers who offer environmentally friendly solutions and services
